Important Notes
- Not all vendors receiving $600 or more in payments require a 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC from your firm. Consult the Instructions for Form 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC at www.irs.gov to determine which vendors should receive a 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC.
- Print 1099s and the 1096 form on a laser printer. We recommend placing forms in the paper bin tray instead of the manual feed tray.
- Checks created and posted in Juris during the year, plus or minus any supplemental amount, print the 1099 amount in only one of the available boxes on the 1099 forms.
- The 1099 form allows only two lines for the vendor street address. This does not affect the vendor name, city, state, or ZIP code. If you have vendors with street addresses that exceed two lines, use the Vendor Address tab to move the main street address information to the first two lines.
- We recommend printing 1099 forms on plain paper before printing them on IRS forms so you can review the form layout. You can adjust the top margin by editing Adjust Top Margin on the Print Options tab.
- The Juris 1099 Utility does not support Combined Federal and State Filing. Refer to IRS Publication 1220 for FIRE and IRS Publication 5717 for IRIS, and seek assistance from your accountant or tax consultant to prepare electronic processing of Combined Federal and State filings.
- The Juris 1099 Utility does not support the 1099-S form for real estate.
- The 1099 Utility is not compatible with dot matrix printers. Using forms designed for dot matrix printers will cause alignment issues on the printed form.
Print Options Tab
Use the Print Options tab to set up firm, threshold, printer, margin, compensation, and 1096 information.
- In Firm's Federal Tax Identification Number, enter your firm's Federal Tax Identification Number in the following format: ##-#######. Include the hyphen.
-
In Threshold Amount, enter the threshold amount used to determine which vendors require 1099s.
For example, in 2020, vendors receiving payments of $600 or more required 1099s.
-
In Begin With and Print Through, select a single vendor or a range of vendors.
The utility prints a form for any vendor selected in Juris. To select a vendor for the 1099 Utility, select the Gets 1099 box.
-
In Select Year to Print, review the year to print.
The default year automatically pulls from your Juris database.
- In Sort By, select how to sort 1099s and the 1099 Report. Available options are:
- Vendor Name
- Vendor Tax ID
- Vendor Code
-
In Firm's Address, enter your firm's address, or use the drop-down list to insert the firm name stored in the Juris Setup and Manage window along with the office address.
If the firm name is included in the Office Address section, delete one of the firm name lines after selecting the address. Edits made here do not affect the address stored in Juris.
Only six lines print in the Payer's box. If the firm name wraps to a second line, only four lines remain for the address and phone number.
Verify that the firm's phone number is listed on one of the address lines, or type it on the forms after printing the 1099s.
-
In Destination, select the printer to use for printing 1099s.
Print 1099s on a laser printer. We recommend placing forms in the paper bin tray instead of the manual feed tray.
-
In Number of Copies, enter the number of 1099 form copies to print per vendor.
This field does not apply to the 1099 Report or the 1099 Test Page.
-
In Adjust Top Margin, adjust the top margin of the forms up or down by as much as 1/2 inch in either direction to align the forms with your printer.
You can enter a value from -720 to 720. Enter a positive number to move the form down, or a negative number to move the form up. One-half inch is equivalent to 720 units.
- In Print Compensation Amounts, determine whether compensation amounts print on the 1099 form.
The utility enters a value on the 1099 form for any vendor that meets one or more of the following conditions:
- The vendor has a total check amount paid and posted for the year that meets or exceeds the threshold amount.
- The vendor has a supplemental amount for the year that is greater than or equal to the threshold amount.
You can clear Print Compensation Amounts to create 1099s without a dollar amount. If you clear this option, the utility prints 1099s for all vendors selected with Gets 1099 and ignores the threshold limit.
If you clear Print Compensation Amounts, you must manually fill in the dollar amounts after printing the 1099s.
- In Truncate SSN, choose whether to replace the first part of the Social Security Number with Xs and display only the last four digits.
This applies only to vendors where Social Security has been selected as the Tax ID type.
- In 1096 Information, enter the information needed for Form 1096.
You must file one 1096 per form type. If you are reporting both 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC, you need one 1096 for MISC and another for NEC.
Enter or review the following information:
- Name of person to contact
- Telephone number
- Email Address
-
Total Number of forms
This must be calculated manually. You can print the 1099 Report to show totals for MISC and NEC forms that have been set up and are above the $600 threshold.
-
Federal income tax withheld
This must be calculated manually.
-
Total amount reported with this Form 1096
This must be calculated manually. You can print the 1099 Report to show totals for MISC and NEC forms that have been set up and are above the $600 threshold.
-
Print X in 1099-MISC or Print X in 1099-NEC
Select one of the boxes.
Vendor Information Tab
Use the Vendor Information tab to review vendor information, select the form and box to print or export, and enter supplemental amounts.
The following reports can help verify vendor payment history:
| How many vendors | Period covered | Location | Added info |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single vendor | All years | Inquiry-Reports > Vendor Inquiry | |
| All vendors | All years | Inquiry-Reports > Accounts Payable > Vendor History | Includes ITD Totals |
| All vendors | Single year | Supplemental Reports > Vendor Payments | 1099? Y or N |
You can click the Vendor, Vendor Name, or Print on Form column headings to sort the spreadsheet by that item. Sorting does not affect the sort order when you print 1099 forms or the 1099 Report.
Sorting by Print on Form can help you review the form type and select or clear print and export options.
Print on Form
The utility displays the box selected as the default in Vendor setup.
Available options include:
- Nonemployee Compensation - NEC Box 1
- Rents - MISC Box 1
- Other Income - MISC Box 3
- Gross Proceeds Paid to an attorney - MISC Box 10
Print in Box
The utility displays the selected box as the default in Print in Box.
If you change the box selection in the utility, Juris also changes the Report As box on the vendor's Flag tab. If you change the Report As box on the vendor's Flag tab in Juris, the utility also changes its box value.
Selections for 1099-MISC boxes other than 1, 3, or 10, or 1099-NEC Box 1, are not saved with Juris vendors. Only Nonemployee Compensation, Gross Proceeds paid to an Attorney, Rents, and Other Income are available options for Juris vendors. However, the report and 1099s print the amount in the selected box.
Supplemental Amount
Use Supplemental Amount to add or subtract from the accumulating 1099 amount.
- Enter the amount you want to add or subtract.
- Use a leading hyphen when subtracting a supplemental amount.
- Changing the amount in the utility also changes it on the vendor's Flag tab.
If you paid vendors using a method other than Juris, your current Juris vendor information may not have complete 1099 amounts. For more information about calculating proper 1099 amounts, contact Juris Customer Support.
Print 1099s
By default, the utility exports all vendor 1099s. If you do not want to export a 1099 for a vendor, remove the check mark next to the vendor.

Export 1099s

- FIRE 1099s
