The Client/Matters table stores client and matter information and provides settings for billing methods. A client record contains general information, but you must also create at least one matter before you can record fees or expenses and perform billing.
A client can have one or more matters. Matters inherit many settings from the client by default, but you can change those settings at the matter level when needed.
Clients and matters
Client records contain information shared across the client’s matters. Matter records contain the details needed to record fees and expenses and bill for specific work.
Many matter settings use the corresponding client settings by default. You can modify the inherited information for an individual matter.
Billing matters
You can bill matters in either of the following ways:
- Single-matter bill: Bills a matter separately.
- Consolidated bill: Bills multiple matters together.
Enter billing addresses at the client level on the Billing Address tab. You can then assign those addresses to matters or consolidations for billing.
Defaults and permissions
Settings in Firm Options determine many of the defaults used for clients and matters. Firm Options can also determine whether users have permission to change specific fields.
The Client Matter Intake module allows you to enter information for a new client from one form instead of moving between multiple Juris windows. It can also use default values to populate fields and reduce data entry.
