Task Codes are optional and are enabled in Firm Options under the Trans. panel. They can be required for time and expense entries at the client or matter level, included in budgeting for fees and expenses, and associated with Fee Schedules or Task Code Cross Reference Lists.
Task Codes in Juris identify groups of tasks used on time and expense entries. They can also insert a default narrative and link to Fee Schedules and Task Code Cross Reference Lists.

Overview of Task Codes
Task Codes are used to code time and expense entries with specific task groups.
Examples include:
- B100 for Administration
- B110 for Case Administration
- B230 for Financing/Cash Collections
A default narrative can be assigned to a Task Code. When the Task Code is selected, the narrative is automatically inserted into the time entry narrative.
Task Codes can also be linked to:
- Fee Schedules
- Task Code Cross Reference Lists
Task Code use is optional and is controlled in Firm Options under the Trans. panel. Task Codes can be required for time and expense entries at the client or matter level through the Client/Matter Int./Disc. panels. They can also be included when budgeting for fees and expenses on the Matter/Budget panels.
Find a Task Code
The Finder in Juris is preconfigured to search Task Codes when these steps are used.

Select Tables > Task Codes.
- Select Tools > Find.

Review the default settings.
The Look In field displays Juris\Tables\Task Codes, and Search Subfolders is selected by default.
- Optional: Select Case Sensitive if you want the search to match exact capitalization.

In the Named box, enter all or part of the Task Code name or description.
Details in the Task Code Xref spreadsheet are not included in the search.

Click Find Now, or press Enter.
Search results appear at the bottom of the form.
- Double-click an item to open it.
- To start over, click New Search to clear the current search criteria and results.
Edit a Task Code
- Select Tables > Task Codes.
- Find the Task Code and double-click the icon or description to open it.

Modify the details as needed.
The Task Code itself cannot be changed.
- Optional: Click the Spell Check icon on the toolbar.
- Click the Save icon on the toolbar.
Delete a Task Code
- Select Tables > Task Codes.
- Find the Task Code and double-click the icon or description to open it.

Click the Delete icon on the toolbar.
If the Task Code is referenced elsewhere in Juris, a message indicates that it cannot be deleted.
- At the confirmation prompt, click Yes, or press Enter.
The Task Code is deleted.
Create a Task Code
- Select Tables > Task Codes.

Click the New icon on the toolbar.
- The Task Codes - New window opens.
- Enter the Task Code information:
- Task Code: Enter a 1-4 character code. The code can include digits, letters, or both.
- Description: Enter up to 30 characters.
- Use Hours from this task code on time entries: Select this option to insert hours from the Fee Schedule into the time entry.
- Use Rate from this task code on time entries: Select this option to insert the rate from the Fee Schedule into the time entry.
- Use Fee from this task code on time entries: Select this option to insert fees from the Fee Schedule into the time entry.

Narrative: Enter the narrative for the Task Code. This narrative appears in the time or expense entry when the Task Code is used.

If you selected the hours, rate, or fee options, make sure the Task Code is assigned to the applicable Fee Schedules.
When those Fee Schedules are applied to a matter, the selected options determine the values used on time entries for that matter.
- Optional: Click the Spell Check icon on the toolbar.
- Click the Save icon on the toolbar.
The Task Code is added. After the Task Code is saved, additional icons appear for Fee Schedules and Task Code Xref.
Additional options
After saving a Task Code, you can review related setup options:
- Click the Fee Schedules icon to open and review the Fee Schedule form. The code may be added to fee schedules, if desired.
- Click the Task Code Xref icon to open and review the Task Code Cross Reference form.
Click Save again if needed to confirm the new Task Code.
