Practice Classes in Juris are used to differentiate the types of legal work performed by a firm's attorneys—such as litigation or estate planning— for Clients and Matters. The system enables users to find, create, edit, and delete Practice Classes to better manage the classification of legal work.

Overview of Practice Classes
Practice Classes differentiate between various types of work performed by the firm’s attorneys (e.g., Litigation, Real Estate, Estate Planning). Once defined, a Practice Class can be assigned to Clients and Matters, allowing the firm to classify the type of work it performs.
Find a Practice Class
You can search for practice classes using the Finder in Juris, which is pre-configured to search only in Practice Classes when you follow these steps:
- Navigate to Practice Classes by selecting Tables > Practice Classes.
- Open the Finder Form by selecting Tools > Find from the menu.
- Review the default settings. The Look In field displays the path: Juris\Tables\Practice Classes. The Search Subfolders option is enabled by default.
- Optional: Refine the search by checking the Case Sensitive box if you want the search to match the exact case.

In the Named text box, enter all or part of the practice class name or description.
The account numbers are not included in the search.
- Initiate the search by clicking the Find Now button or press Enter. The search results display at the bottom of the form.
- Double-click an item to open it. Click the New Search button to clear the current search criteria and results before performing a new search.
Edit a Practice Class
To edit an existing practice class, follow these steps:
- Access the Table by selecting Tables > Practice Classes.
- Find the practice class and double-click the icon or description to open it.
- Modify the details as required. The Practice Class itself cannot be changed.
- Optional: Spell check the form by clicking the Spell Check icon on the toolbar.
- Save the modifications by clicking the Save icon on the toolbar.
Delete a Practice Class
To delete an existing practice class, follow these steps:
- Access the Table by selecting Tables > Practice Classes.
- Find the practice class and double-click the icon or description to open it.

Click the Delete icon on the toolbar.
If the practice class is referenced elsewhere in Juris, a message will indicate that it cannot be deleted.
- At the confirmation prompt, click Yes or press Enter. The practice class is deleted.
Create a Practice Class
To create a new practice class, follow these steps:
- Access the Table by selecting Tables > Practice Classes.
- Click the New icon on the toolbar. This opens the Practice Classes – New window.
- Enter the practice class information:
- Practice Class: Enter a 1–4 character code (digits, alpha characters, or a combination).
- Description: Enter up to 30 characters.

Assign accounts:
- Click the Income Account ellipsis button to select the appropriate account number from the Chart of Accounts.
- Click the Adj. Account ellipsis button to select the corresponding account number.

- Optional: Perform a spell check by clicking the Spell Check icon on the toolbar.
- Click the Save icon on the toolbar. The practice class is added.
